Founded in 2012, STEMchicks, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that engages girls by providing a STEM-based education designed specifically for them — empowering them to succeed in science, technology, engineering, and math. Girls participate in fun, hands-on STEM activities, have an opportunity to hear from STEM professionals, and engage in confidence boosting experiences. Girls involved with STEMchicks are surrounded by positive role models from the Education and STEM fields to help increase motivation and better prepare them for the 21st century.

Meet Our Team
Shayla Mark, Founder/Executive Director
Shayla currently serves as the Founding STEM Academy Coordinator at a middle school within the Orange County Public School system. An educator for the last 9 years, she also teaches science and engineering to 6th – 8th graders. Shayla graduated from Florida State University (go ‘Noles!) and was recently nominated as Teacher of the Year by her peers. LinkedIn
Michelle Blake, Co-Founder/Community Relations Director
A marketing professional for 10 years, Michelle has held various positions with Holt Renfrew, a leading Canadian luxury retailer, Beazer Homes & Hard Rock International, Hotel & Casino Division. In 2013, she was nominated as a Top 40 Under 40 Business Professional by Orlando Business Journal. Since discovering her passion for education and all things science, Michelle has made it her mission to share her knowledge with Central Florida youth.
Angel Maldonado, Program Coordinator
A science and engineering teacher with Orange County Public Schools, Angel holds a degree in Chemistry and is a certified member of the American Chemistry Society. He is a Project Lead the Way certified teacher and is passionate about empowering youth in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Taniqua Gillyard, Social Media & Volunteer Coordinator
As a recent graduate of the University of Central Florida who studied Industrial Engineering and Management Systems, Taniqua is excited to extend the pipeline of STEM into our youth!
Susan Colwell, Curriculum Director
Former Osceola County Teacher of the Year, Susan has been a science/STEM educator for 11 years. She currently teaches science to 6th – 8th grade students with Orange County Public Schools. Known for her uber-engaging lessons, Susan also coaches Science Olympiad National Tournament.
